| I'm trying to decide whether to rent a car for the convention. Most of that decision depends on what is within walking distance of the hotel, where I would define "walking distance" as a mile or less and well-lit/safe at night. Is there a grocery store and/or liquor store in that range? Many restaurants? |

I don't know how close the Disney resort is to the hotels and convention center. (It has been too many years) but it has all kinds of stores and resaurants. _________________ Science over Superstition |

There are convenience stores and restaurants within a short walk of the hotel/convention center complex. There are more stores a longer walk -- less than a mile, and I did the walk myself during a planning meeting a few months ago.
The thing to keep in mind is that the Hilton "turns its back" on Disney, and most of the shops and restaurants are on the Disney side of the hotel; that is, you have to walk around the perimeter of the hotel/convention center complex to get to the shops. If you're someone who walks out the front entrance of the hotel, and if you can't see a shop or restaurant, decides there are none -- I encountered this at ConJose -- then you will in fact be stuck. |

| Thanks for the tips, Kevin. Yes, the hotel parking fee is the main reason I'm likely to not rent a car. Sounds like I can manage with what's in walking distance if I bring a bottle of good scotch with me. |

I didn't say it would be good liquor, though. |

Yeah, but I'm coming from Canada, so bringing my own bottle of scotch (or whatever) is not going to be as easy or practical. So are there any GOOD liquor stores around or am I going to have to hunt down "paula" and bum a drink off her?

Disney is right across the street but the entrance to the parks and the Downtown Disney shopping/dining area is a good half mile away. As of a year ago there was a shuttle service running between the parks and various hotels. Maybe other destinations too. Pick-up was between the Hilton and Marriott and an all day pass cost 2 or 3 dollars. |

Details about said shuttles and a map of the area including restaurants are actually on the laconiv site, hidden under "Getting to Anaheim", (which one probably wouldn't look at if one already knew how one was getting to Anaheim). http://laconiv.org/2006/vis/localbus.htm _________________ ================================
