| micheled wrote: | Thanks. Still more questions, as I have only been to the World Fantasy Con, which is small and very different:
At the WFCon there was a registration table where they handed out bookbags full of free books right when signing in. The mention of Freebie tables makes me wonder how the free books (?) distributed at WorldCons? A separate location? What kind of freebies are at the freebie tables? Are they near the registration usually?

The Voodoo board, message board, party board and freebies are usually located together near registration. Freebies can be flyers, promo items like buttons and key chains, books, posters, you-name-it. The selection tends to change through the weekend as there is often too much to put out all at once. Check back at least once a day.
Also don't miss the convention News Letter for updates and party listings. It is usually published twice a day plus special editions to announce Hugo and Masquerade winners.
As others mentioned sit down with the schedule and site map to get your barings. Advice I should have followed at my first Worldcon in 1984. At the time some meeting rooms in the Hilton and Anaheim Convention Center had the same names. I didn't find the main CC meeting rooms until the last day! |

My first con (WorldCon in San Jose 2002), I felt completely overwhelmed. In a good way, of course. I went to two different panels every session cuz I just couldn't decide. I brought a huge pile of fantasy novels and got them signed by all my favorite authors. It was just so wonderful meeting everyone I'd heard about in person. Plus the Masquerade alone was worth the trip! _________________ Valerie Frankel, author of Henry Potty and the Pet Rock: An Unauthorized Harry Potter Parody www.harrypotterparody.com |

Thank goodness for Wikipedia; I just found out what a Voodoo Board is.
What are the Kaffeklatches like? Do I need to be well-versed with the author's body of work and have questions prepared? Or are they generally large enough that I can mostly listen in? There's an author whose book I loved, but I haven't read his other work yet. |

Kaffeklatches are very dependant on who the author is. Sometimes they are an opportunity for the author to discuss whatever is on his/her mind with fans and friends, others may just be an intimate question and asnwer session.
They are small, enough people to sit around a table, not more (up to nine people.) Though some that aren't a popular as others might not be filled. So it is best to come prepared with a question or two, or feel free to sit back and listen until you feel comfortable joining the conversation.
Often there will be time for autographs, so bring the book you loved and maybe pick up the next one also and say how you are looking forward to reading it.
(many times I've gotten books signed that I haven't read, and in some cases, still haven't read. ) _________________ Sharon Sbarsky

I don't remember if I went to this Koffee Klatsch on purpose or just was there. David Friedman (who has a brand new novel out) was scheduled for one. I was at the table because I had just finished one with a couple of authors and we ended up talking about software that permits you to put several operating systems on the new Macs. There was a friend of his there and we talked about a bunch of fannish stuff.

Anyone getting bored at a Worldcon has been lobotomized!
A couple of years back I was trying to tell Toronto fans why they should go to Worldcon. Bear this in mind, but otherwise this article will tell you an awful lot of good things about Worldcons.
And go to any "Welcome to Worldcon" panels like the one on Thursday at 17:30 in room 207-B in the ACC titled YOUR FIRST WORLDCON? (Blurb: Ideas, suggestions, and things you shouldn't miss. For fans, writers, and everyone who doesn't quite know what they've gotten themselves into.)
And if you see me at con, or anyone wearing a button that invites questions, well then stop us and ask anything you like. Don't be shy.
Have a great time. There is nothing quite like a Worldcon anywhere out there! It's going to be sensational. _________________ Thanks for your time,

| What's the deal with fans wearing buttons? Or ribbons? Is this part of fan culture? |

Yes, or at least it has its niche. Fans allow and enjoy all things. _________________ Thanks for your time,
